Zonderland & Van Gerner to London 2012

EK turnen Berlijn, kwalificaties

The decision has finally been made, Epke Zonderland and Celine Van Gerner will both be representing the Netherlands in London at this summers Olympics. The KNGU announced the decision today following two court rulings earlier in the year which saw both Jeffrey Wammes and Celine Van Gerner appealing the KNGU’s primary decision to send Zonderland and Wyomi Masela to London. A final decision was to be made following each of the gymnasts performances at their respective European Championships and World Cup competitions.

Wammes and Masela did not take part in the final World Cup event last weekend in Ghent due to injury. Congratulations to both gymnasts, in my opinion I am glad that the KNGU’s decision has not changed for Zonderland and very much welcome Van Gerner to go forward.

Whilst I think the right athletes have been selected I can only imagine how devastated Masela must feel. What a horrible chapter this saga has been in gymnastics history. I hope national gymnastics federations world over have learned from this.

Chuffed Zonderland has been selected – High Bar wouldn’t be the same without him.
