London 2012 Artistic Gymnastics medal table

London 2012 Olympic gold medal

China and Russia top the table and USA follow. History and big stories were made several times over at these Games at Artistic Gymnastics.

  • The American Women’s team became the first USA Team to win the gold team medal in 16 years.
  • Gabrielle Douglas became the first African – American woman to clinch the All Around title.
  • Zou Kai became the most decorated Chinese gymnast, winning three medals at this Olympic Games.
  • Aly Raisman became the first American to win gold on Floor.
  • Oksana Chusovitina and Jordan Jovtchev competed in their sixth Olympic Games.
  • Several gymnast lost out to medals based in these Olympic Games due to tie breaking rules -some of those included were Vanessa Ferrari, Catalina Ponor and Aly Raisman.
  • McKayla Maroney who most thought was destined to clinch the gold medal on vault,
  • In the Beam Final, Romania withdrew Diana Bulimar who had qualified, in order to let Larisa Iordache, who was first reserve, compete, with the though that she was one of their best medal hopes. She finished 6th with a fall.
  • Arthur Nabarette Zanetti became the first Brazilian gymnast to win an Olympic medal, ahead of the Games moving to Rio in 2016.
  • Great Britain’s Men’s Team finished in a historic third place in the Team Final, becoming the first GB male team to win a medal in 100 years.
  • Epke Zonderland finally successfully completed his Cassina-Kovacs-Kolman release combination to win gold on High Bar.
  • In the Women’s team competition, both Great Britain and Canada had historic finishes, finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
  • Aliya Mustafina became the second Russian Woman after Svetlana Khorkina to win the Uneven Bars title.
  • Mustafina also left this Olympic Games as the most decorated female gymnast in London with 4 medals.
  • For the first time since the Sydney Olympics the Ukraine’s Men’s Team won a medal…for 10 minutes. An inquiry by the Japanese into Kohei Uchimura’s Pommel Horse score led to the Ukraine being pushed out of medal contention and into fourth place.
  • We made it through a High Bar final without ANY falls!

I’m sure that there are plenty other historic and exciting moments that I may not have mentioned above. If you can think of any, please list them below in the comments section.

Have you included Trampoline Gymnastics here (seeing the Gold for Canada, and the extra Chinese one I can’t account for)? Because if so, you should probably hold off on the roundup until rhythmics is over!

Mustafina is one of all time greats. She was ruled out in favor of Komova even by the Russians themselvs. But, when everything was on the line she was the one who got mother Russia most of the medals. Kudos Queen Mustafina

Aliya’s bars were amazing and she stole the shows hands down! I do think the rules set by the FIG are so wrong. If they kept it fair like the other sports at the Olympic Games two others would have received medals. Aly in the all around and Vanessa on floor, Jordyn would have made the all around, it should NEVER be 02 per country it should be the BEST 24 regardless of which country they’re from. It’s the All Around and they are fighting for the BEST All Around gymnast, they need to go back to the time where 03 could advance to the all around. 2000 Games Romania actually took Gold, Silver & Bronze (clean sweep), but then Andrea was DQ for taking cough medicine. FIG is putting harder requirements on these athletes and then telling them “oh by the way only 03 gymnasts are allowed to compete it and only 02 of your 05 can compete it again in event finals and or all around.” I think it’s STUPID that a team can have 03 or maybe all 05 qualify but because they are “Keeping it fair” and say only 02 can do it for a medal. If they are so worried about making it fair, the top 12 teams all have to fight it out for the top 24 spots and the top 24 make it regardless of how many advance from one team, then add an additional 12 for the countries that send one athlete “IF” they qualify. So 36 compete the All Around, It’s the All Around and the BEST gymnast should be allowed to compete and they used to compete 36 women in the all around. The event finals should stay as is 08 BUT it should be the 08 top scores If China and Russia take all 08 spots on bars so be it, the rest of the field needs to step up their game. I like to see it when you’re on the edge of your seat because the field is that good.
