On December 17th USA Gymnastics released the names of the gymnasts representing the United States at the AT & T American Cup. The annual event takes places on March 5th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
World 2015 Team medallists Gabrielle Douglas and Maggie Nichols will compete. This will be Nichols first outing at the event while Douglas was at the 2012 American Cup, as an “exhibitor”. London 2012 team mates Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman competed, finishing first (61.032) and second (60.832) respectively but for Douglas, the exhibition slot was somewhat of a coming out event, as she scored 61.299, beating Wiebers score.
On the Men’s side Sam Mikulak and Donnell Whittenburg will compete. Mikulak, who recently received surgery for an ankle injury, finished top of the lot at the 2014 edition of the American Cup but settled for 4th place in 2015. Whittenburg, who won bronze on vault at the 2015 World Championhips, will make his second appearance for the USA at the event having taken bronze in 2015.
Gymnasts from 11 countries are expected to compete in next year’s AT&T American Cup. The countries are Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Switzerland and United States.
