Five WAG teams competed today Australia, Canada, China, Japan and Korea, strong teams who we should perhaps expect to see at the Olympics in London next year. The Chinese fought off stiff competition today from the Japanese team to claim the Women’s Team title at the Japan Cup. The team competition was a 5-3-3 event (5 gymnasts, 3 compete and 3 scores count) and the Chinese girls sure made their scores count. China also had the highest total scores on vault, beam and floor and soared 3 marks higher than the Japanese girls to claim the top spot. Lauren Mitchell debuted her very much talked about new floor routine, no videos have surfaced online yet. She did score the highest score on floor for a non – Chinese gymnast, so it sounds promising.
The Japanese men’s team did well on home turf to claim the gold medal. Today’s competition was a huge boost for the team from Great Britain who managed to beat the Chinese team for a medal, the guys have certainly been stepping up their game in the last few months and are certainly looking promising for London 2012. certainly showed that he was delighted. The team from the USA finished one mark behind the Japanese men to bag the silver medal. It didn’t sound like Daniel Keatings had the best day, he struggled on both Pommel Horse and P Bars, which is unusual for him on these apparatus. Not to worry Dan, you still have plenty of time to sort it out before Worlds. You can see a video of Kohei Uchimura’s high bar here or below. Unfortunately it’s the only video I can find from the Japan Cup online.
