Ireland’s Kieran Behan qualifies for London Test Event Floor Final

Artistic WCh Rotterdam/NED 2010: BEHAN Kieran/IRL

Kieran Behan pulled out all he had for his floor routine at the O2 tonight, luckily he did so as he has earned a place at the Floor event finals later this week. The Irish gymnast who trains at Tolworth Gymnastics Club fist pumped the air as he walked off the floor, knowing he was the boy who had done good. It was an agonizing 3 rotations wait to find out if he had qualified for the floor final on Thursday, and that’s what he did. He says:

“I went for a clean performance but I made silly mistakes at the bars (parallel bars). But I am happy to be here, enjoying the experience and hoping to get into the floor final. My mum and dad are here.”

It wasn’t all a good competition for Behan, parallel bars didn’t go his way mid way through the routine when he didn’t quite get up enough on his upstart.

“I was happy with the others but unhappy with the bars.”

All things considered, he did excellently once he shook the nerves off from P Bars. This is a gymnast who has had only three and a half weeks to prepare for the competition, finding out later than others that he would be vying for an Olympic spot. It’s been a long road for Behan, he has a history of injuries as we have spoken about before and was expected to never perform gymnastics again, let alone walk. So is this qualification at a big event the start of something new for Behan? He sure hopes so:

“Hopefully my luck will change. This is only my second six piece (apparatus) in six years, due to injury. Tokyo was my first (at the world championships in October 2011).”

Kieran will compete in the London 2012 Test Event Floor final on Thursday. Official confirmation of gymnasts who have earned a spot in the London 2012 Olympics have not yet been released, hopefully Kieran will have made it. We will post information once it becomes available from the FIG. We will also be uploading videos of all of Kierans routines. For now here is his High Bar routine:

Leave a comment of congratulations or good luck to Kieran below as we’ll be meeting him later this week for a chat, he’d love to see your comments from home (and abroad). Below are the gymnasts who have qualified to the floor final:
