Why are Britain’s gymnasts suddenly so good?

Ollie Williams wonders..

Why, though, is this all happening now? Who has flicked a switch to turn Britain from a gymnastics also-ran to a world power with an eye on medals at a home Olympics? Is it all down to money?

It’s certainly an interesting take on it. Have a read of the article. I always love reading about how gymnastics is  funded in other countries and how their systems work.

I think its great, our gymnasts are working very hard which is therefore helping the sport get more funding which is means they have better equipment, coaches and more time to spend training.

Our basic training from very young gymnasts has been looked at and we seemed to have taken a lot on board and we have some superb gymnasts coming through the ranks. Is so exciting!

Does anyone know where I can find out about junior competitions to take my daughter to?

You’re right Tracy, it’s really great that the gymnasts are working so hard and in turn helping the sport become recognised by their achievements. It’s always wonderful when that happens as in countries like Ireland and the UK gym can very much be seen as a minority sport against rugby and football etc.

I think a lot of what has helped us in Western Europe is the influence of Eastern European, Asian and American coaches coming over here and teaching us new things. I know that Irish Gymnastics especially had a complete over haul of their coach education scheme. It really is so exciting to think that our countries could produce such super gymnasts as the bigger nations have and that we are catching up on them in time.

Is your daughter already in a gym club?

Thanks so much for your great comment! :)
