Where does Chertkov stand?

You might remember that Indian gymnast Asish Kumar made history by winning 2 medals for his country in the Commonwealth Games back in October. A great achievement for the young gymnast and for India but the GFI (Gymnastics Federation of India) weren’t satisfied with Ashish’s bronze and silver medals.  Skip forward to the Asian Games and the controversy which resulted in coach Vladimir Chertkov walking out on his team.

Chertkov’s contract was said to be up after the Asian Games but Mumbai Mirror reports that his contract will end within the next 2 months. Cherktov isn’t quite sure whether his contract will be renewed or whether he will be looking for new job soon. Apparently this is the case for a lot of coaches in India. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has left a lot of coaches in limbo, their contracts expired at the end of 2010 but the SAI haven’t yet confirmed whether the contracts will be renewed.

Cherktov says:

“I have tried contacting SAI officials, but have not received any reply to either my letters or my emails. I guess that is the procedure of how things are being done here,”.

“I guess those people who create history in India are quickly forgotten by everyone. My contract expires by the end of February and I would like to know if they will extend my contract to the Olympics,”.

I would have thought after the hassle at Asian Games and the unbelievable response from the GFI towards Kumar’s historic win that Cherktov would have had enough. I don’t know his work but would he be a sought after coach? Would he find another top coaching job easily?

In saying that, the report states that GFI General Secretary Kan Singh has told the Mumbai Mirror that whilst Cherktov is a great coach he has a list of demands  and conditions that could be working against him. The very apt title of the article is correct, Cherktov is “hanging in the air” until the end of the month when decisions are said to be made.
