Uchimura joins Tokyo 2020 Olympic Bid

3 time All Around World Champion Kohei Uchimura joined Tokyo 2020 CEO Masato Mizuno, Tokyo 2020 Sports Director Yuko Arakida, Tokyo 2020 Chairman Shintaro Ishihara, Japan’s badminton star Reiko Shiota, Athletics gold medalist in Women’s 5000m at Athens Paralympics Wakako Tsuchida, Tokyo 2020 Council Secretary General Kazuo Ogura, Head of Bureau of Sports of Tokyo Metropolitan Government Masaru Hosoi – in a bid for Tokyo to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Tokyo failed to secure the 2016 Games which was awarded to Rio, it previously hosted the Olympics in 1964. Tokyo is promoting its 2020 Olypic bid as a symbol of Japan’s recovery from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that left over 15,000 people dead or missing on Japan’s northeast coast. Uchimura has vowed to work hard to help his country secure the bid:

“Our bid isn’t just for Tokyo; it’s for our entire country and for our people, coming together as one”

“I want to see Japan energised by this bid, and the first step for me to contribute to this Movement is to give my all at the London Olympics, leaving nothing behind.”
