Tokyo – still venue for World Championships 2011

2011 ART WCH Tokyo (JPN)

Despite the current natural disaster going on in Japan, the World Gymnastics Championships (unlike the World Figure Skating Championships) are still due to go ahead in Tokyo in October this year.

The FIG Media Official Olivier Strebel made it to Japan earlier this week despite the earthquake and subsequent tsunami to inspect the venue and training halls for the World Gymnastics Championships. Read his account below or on the Tokyo 2011 website.

The earthquake occurred just before my flight landed in Tokyo and it took 24 hours to land in from above Tokyo. But it’s nothing to me considering people who became victims of the disaster. I would like to extend my deep condolence to the deceased people and pray for Japan’s earliest possible recovery. Although in this kind of situation, people welcomed me very warmly and I would like to express my gratitude for their kindness from the bottom of my heart.

Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, the competition venue for the championships was impressive in terms of the size as well as facilities. The World Championships has continued to evolve year after year such as in London and then Rotterdam. Mr. Watanabe, Secretary General of the Organizing Committee for the World Championships promised me to make the best possible competition. After the inspection, now I’m quite confident that we can make the best competition.

Yoyogi First Gymnasium, the training hall, was also impressive. Although the Gymnasium is old which was built in the year of Tokyo Olympics in 1964, its design is modern and sophisticated. I can expect that we can prepare good environment for gymnasts and hold the good competition.
