The Gymnast

Olympics Day 7 - Artistic Gymnastics

Great Britain’s Beth Tweddle, Hannah Whelan, Becky Downie, Becky Wing, Laura Jones, Imogen Cairns and Marissa King will feature in a film which willl be aired on BBC 2 this Saturday at 1.30pm. The film “The Gymnast” shows the girls on their journey to the 2008 Beijing Games.

Between January and July 2008, a film crew from Prospect Pictures (working in conjunction with BBC Films), directed by BAFTA winner Anthony Wonke, were given privileged access to the British women’s artistic squad and its coaches and support staff as they prepared for the Beijing Olympic Games – the result of their work is the film ‘Gymnast’.

The film provides a unique and unprecedented insight into the world of elite women’s gymnastics following the highs and lows of the elite group pushing for places in the GBR team, dealing with injuries and set-backs, coping with the pressure of competition, and ultimately being told their selection fate. Opening in the depths of British winter and finishing with the spectacular closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, ‘Gymnast’ is a must see for all gymnastics and sports fans.

  1. Megan says:

Is it going to air in the US or online?

  2. Admin says:

Not that I know of I’m afraid. It’s basically a documentary. I’m sure it might somehow end up on youtube

  3. This is a fascinating storyline and I hope the documentary sheds light on the intense training requirements and emotional roller coasters the girls experience. It would appropriate for parents to watch with their children and be used as a teaching-learning opportunity – to discuss some of the core elements of participating in this sport – teamwork, disappointment, discipline, sacrifice and reaching goals. I look forward to checking it out!
