Tweet Irish gymnasts have continued to impress in Athens, winning another 3 medals today at the Special Olympics World Summer Games. Laura Rumball from Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin placed 3rd on both Uneven Bars and Balance Beam and won a silver medal on floor in Level 2 at her first World Summer Games. Congratulations Laura!!

Tweet The Special Olympics World Games 2011 will take place in Athens, Greece June 25th – July 4th. 7,500 Special Olympics Athletes from 185 nations will compete in 21 Olympic-type sports. These will be the first games that founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver will not attend, Ms Shriver passed away in 2009.

Tweet The Managing Director (MD) and President of the Special Olympics in Europe and Eurasia has cited her interest in running for the office of President in the Republic of Ireland. On May 26th Mary Davis announced that she was to seek nomination to run for the Presidency of Ireland as an independent candidate.

1,900 Special Olympics athletes from the 4 corners of Ireland will travel to Limerick to participate in the 4-day residential Games, in 13 sports competitions, held in various venues in Limerick. The Games will take place from June 9th – 13th. Gymnastics is a popular sport in the Special Olympics. Training and competition opportunities are offered in female artistic, male artistic and rhythmic gymnastics.
