London 2012 – 2 years to go
Jul 26th
Tomorrow will mark the day when it will be exactly 2 years until the London 2012 Olympic Games begin. Tim Jones Performance Director speaks to the Guardian about how British Gymnastics has developed over the past year and what it must do next to meet the Olympic medal target.
In the next two years we will … continue building on the successes of the first years of this cycle and ensuring our results are progressive towards London, work towards keeping our gymnasts injury-free and illness-free, qualifying for as many places as possible through the series of World Championships in the Olympic disciplines during 2011, and focusing our resources towards a successful Olympic outcome.

3D Gymnastics?
Jun 29th

According to Tech Eye and Tech Radar – the BBC are planning to broadcast the 2012 Olympics in 3D.
The BBC is lining up boxing and gymnastics as its lead sports for a 2012 Olympics showcasing 3D and Super HD TV.
…….
“And with gymnastics, if you think about someone doing a vault, they start a long way away and move towards you – there is a real sense of depth.”
It was also revealed that boxing and gymnastics will be the headline sports for the 3D display. These sports were chosen for the compact space and sense of depth they offer, which the BBC believes will offer “a real wow factor”.
What do you think? Would you rather to watch Olympic gymnastics in the way we have done so for the past however many years? Or would you be keen to watch 3D gymnastics?
Maybe it’s the closest some of us will ever get to our dream of being in the Olympics!
Beth Tweddle: Addicted to Gymnastics
Jun 13th
I came across an article in The Independent on Sunday by Alan Hubbard. Beth Tweddle discusses Spelbound, her company “Total Gymnastics” and the 2012 Olympics.
Tweddle, the best gymnast Britain has ever produced, who came away with two individual golds and a team silver, puts it down to “a new belief, particularly among the younger gymnasts, hard work, the right coaching and Lottery funding”.
The 25-year-old “Tweds” has become the sport’s talisman having made her international debut in 2001 and winning Commonwealth, European and two world titles. “A lot of people have asked me ‘why do you keep going?’ ” she says. “The motivation is still there and I have one dream: to win a medal in 2012. Any colour will do. I am very hopeful about our chances in the Olympics because there is great strength in depth, particularly among the women.”
Gymnastics has a new look, and female competitors have a new shape. Amanda Kirby, the most successful club coach in the country, explains that there is more emphasis on strength and athleticism. The sport hasn’t changed, neither have the skills, but the training workload has. The time when young gymnasts were all skin and bone has passed. Now you need all-round fitness and a bit more muscle. Kirby, who has coached Tweddle since 1997, says: “The great thing about Beth is her mental strength. She is not exceptionally talented physically but she works tremendously hard. Her determination and dedication are phenomenal.”
Dedication is certainly the name of her game. The line between perfection and pain is as delicately balanced as a pair of feet on the beam, and she has had to bounce back after a number of injuries which have seen her undergo three shoulder operations and half a dozen on her ankles.
Shawn Johnson: In training for 2012
May 5th

According to Full In Full Out, she’s making a comeback! Full In Full Out linked to an article on Des Moines Register that Shawn let it slip that she is training for London 2012. Awaiting a tweet or an announcement on her website / blog to confirm this. Maybe by the time I wake up in the morning, it’ll be the last thing she’ll do in the evening in the USA!
Thanks for the info Full In Full Out!
Also, here is a short interview that Shawn did with Des Moines Register.
After months — heck, more like a year — of speculation, Shawn Johnson made it official today: She’s going for the 2012 Summer Games in London.
The 18-year-old West Des Moines native, who won four medals at Beijing in 2008, talked with reporters — well, myself and WHO-TV’s Chris Hassel, we were the only ones there — for five minutes after her announcement at Hy-Vee Hall. Here were some of the highlights:
What swung your decision?
“I think I’ve known since Day One that (I’ve wanted to come back). I’ve always said gymnastics was my life, I’ll never live without it. I went two years trying to find an excuse to get away from it. But there’s something about it that just pulled me back. I’m a little kid at heart and I can’t get away from it. I love it and I missed it a lot.”
