The current age limit as currently set by FIG is 16, gymnasts must be 16 to be eligible to compete for the Olympics , or turning 16 within the calendar year, to compete in senior level events. For the current Olympic cycle, in order to compete in the 2012 Olympics, a gymnast must have a birth date before January 1st, 1997.

Tweet On Friday, FIG made the decision to strip Sydney 2000 Olympian Dong Fangxiao of her bronze medal as a result of an age scandal. Instead of being honest and admitting to an age cover up, the Chinese have said that they feel strong regret to FIG’s decision and “will further find out the relating information of this matter and reserve the right for explanation or appeal”.
