Shawn Johnson interview

Nike Women posted an interview on their blog with 2008 Olympian Shawn Johnson. Read it in full here.

How many hours a week do you train?
I train for 36 hours a week right now. Six hours, six days a week and then I normally take Sundays off, or if I do anything it will be yoga or pilates. It’s a full-time job.

With that much training how do you stay motivated on the days that are especially tough?
There’s definitely days that I’m frustrated or I don’t want to go to practice or I don’t want to work out, but I always tell myself it will be worth it in the end.

Are there any exercises that you love to hate?
There are some conditioning things that my coach has us do that are really hard and I know they’re good for me but I just dread them. For example, squat jumps around the floor, and we have to do twenty laps sometimes if we get in trouble or even more than that. The squat jumps are what everyone dreads at the gym. They are extremely exhausting and your legs hurt, but you know it’ll be good in the long run.

Do you have a favorite post exercise meal?
My favorite post exercise meal is probably just a really good, fresh salad and chicken. I love something cold and fresh and crisp because when you work hard and you’re all sweaty and hot you don’t want something heavy that makes you feel gross.

You travel quite a bit. What do you do on the road to stay in shape and eat healthy?
When I’m traveling it’s definitely more difficult to eat healthy and work out but I love running so especially if I’m out of town I love running around the cities. When it comes to eating it’s just about finding fresh things; salads and drinking water. I’m always the person that orders milk at the restaurant!

So you’re 20 and you’ve already had a book written about your life. What’s next for you?
I don’t know what’s next for me. There are so many opportunities and things left to experience, but I’m just kind of taking it one day at a time. What I’m focusing on right now is training and upcoming competitions; if I get through all of that and I’m successful and I’m happy, so many doors will open for me afterward, and I’ll focus on it then

Shawn is looking in fantastic shape but why wasn’t she chosen to go to either Pacific Rims or Jesolo?

so devostated she wasn’t picked for a meet!!!

I hope Shawn wasn’t picked for Pac Rims or Jesolo because of the increase of difficulty she made/is about to make. Maybe her upgraded routines aren’t ready for a competition yet, and Marta does not want her to go out and compete with old routines. Maybe she just needs a little bit more time to make them consistent and then blow us away at championships and trials! Please may my hope be true haha!:)
    She looks fabulous though!

Did she go to Texas for Rehabbing her knee?? I read in a recent report that she is back from the rehabbing stint and is working skills…!! And Marta did warn her that if she is not atleast half routine ready by april camp, the hope is much less!!!!

I meant rehab for the second time this year….
