Olympic Torch coming to Ireland

It’s been rumoured and talked about for a long time but finally confirmation was received today that the Olympic Torch will visit Ireland when it is en route to the London 2012 Games as part of the Olympic Torch Relay next year.   The proposal for a short visit on June 6th was ratified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at their Executive Board meeting in Lausanne this morning.

The Olympic Flame will take a trip around Northern Ireland between the 3rd and 7th June 2012. It will arrive in Dublin on the morning of June 6th  having crossed the border. From the start point in Dublin, Torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame through the city and proceedings will culminate in a mid-morning celebration event at a central location in Dublin. Details of it’s route have not yet been confirmed or released but all the same it’s very exciting news.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of the LOCOG said:

“We are delighted to take the Olympic Flame to Dublin on the morning of 6 June. This is a historic opportunity to showcase the wealth of sporting talent from across the Republic ahead of the competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games”
