Meet the Team: 2012 Irish WAG European


Earlier this month Gymnastics Ireland announced both the senior and junior delegation put forward to compete at the 2012 WAG European Championships in Brussels in May. Now it’s time to meet the senior team:


  • Emma Lunn (Excel)
  • Sophie McCoo (Abbey)
  • Sarah Buckley (Douglas)

Emma Lunn

Emma, aged 15 is coached by Russian coach Stanislav Sevostyanov in Excel Gymnastics Club, Leixlip Co. Kildare and has been a member of the Irish National Team since 2008. Her first International competition was the 2008 Celtic Cup held in City of Lisburn – Salto Gymnastics Centre. In recent times Emma has also competed at Mikhail Voronin Cup and Celtic Cup (2009), Junior Europeans (2010), Northern Europeans (2011), Gymstars Invitational Malta (2011) and  the Irish National Team Championships (2011). She also won gold on Bars, Beam and Floor at the 2011 Irish National Apparatus Championships. Emma recently joined GBR gymnast Louis Smith and one of Ireland’s top male gymnasts Luke Carson to relaunch Irish Gymnastics under the new branding Gymnastics Ireland.

Sophie McCoo

Sophie, aged 16 trains with Abbey Gymnastics Centre in Belfast and is coached by Alison McMullan, together they train over 30 hours per week. In the past Sophie has competed at the Celtic Cup competitions, Northern Europeans, Tony Byrne Cup. 2010 saw Sophie crowned Northern Ireland FIG Junior Champion.  In October last year, Sophie represented Ireland at her first World Championships in Tokyo where she competed on beam and floor alongside Charlotte McKenna who recently announced her retirement. In 2011 Sophie won silver on Bars, Beam and Floor and also gold on Vault during the Irish National Apparatus Championships and was also crowned Irish National All Around Champion. She also competed as an individual at the 2011 Celtic Cup in the Minor competition.



Sarah Buckley

15 year old Sarah Buckley trains in Douglas Gymnastics Club in Cork.  Most recently she competed at the Northern Europeans alongside Emma Lunn. At last years Irish National Team Championships Sarah competed as an individual  scoring a very respectable 39.525. Like Emma and Sophie, Sarah has often competed at the Celtic Cup competition.  In 2011 as a Junior, Sarah ranked 3rd on Bars, Vault and Beam and first on Floor at the Irish National Apparatus competition. She placed 2nd in the All Around competition behind Emma Lunn.
