Japan & New Zealand name World Teams

The Japanese have announced the gymnasts who will represent the country in the 2011 World Gymnastics Championships in October. The NHK Cup took place this weekend which served as the second qualifying event which served as team trials for the World Championships. As predicted  Kohei Uchimura and Koko Tsurumi, the current National Champions secured their third consecutive titles at the NHK Cup and also, a place on the National Team for Worlds.

Men’s Team:

  • Kohei Uchimura
  • Kazuhito Tanaka
  • Kenya Kobayashi
  • Koji Yamamuro
  • Makoto Okiguchi
  • Yusuke Tanaka
  • Shogo Nonomura (alternate)
  • Ryohei Kato (alternate)

Women’s Team

  • Koko Tsurumi
  • Rie Tanaka
  • Yuko Shintake
  • Asuka Teramoto
  • Tomomi Iiduka
  • Yu Minobe
  • Mai Yamagishi
  • Kyoko Oshima

 

What’s fascinating is that three siblings have filled three spots on the National Team. Three members of the Tanaka family will represent Japan at the World Championships. Kazuhito Tanaka and his sister Rie Tanaka won the all-around silver medals, and then younger brother Yusuke Tanaka took sixth place. The All Around reported on Friday that New Zealand had named it’s men’s team for the World Championships. Patrick Peng, Misha Koudinov and James Hennin will represent New Zealand in Tokyo in October.

Over the coming months, many other nations will name their teams for Worlds. We look forward to it!
