The spring continues to be a busy time for Irish gymnasts of all disciplines. Last week tumbler Gillian Clarke competed at the European Senior Tumbling Championships in Russia, placing 13th overall in her first outing as a senior. This week the Acro trio of Anya Farrell, Marianne Quirke Bolt and Lauren Holohan from Carlow Gymnastics Club are competing at the 7th Acrobatic Gymnastics World Age Group Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The trio who have worked together since 2010 and train 14 hours a week, previously competed the the European Age Groups in Poland where they placed 4th in the finals, just o.05 away from 3rd place and earning a bronze medal. They also made history in Poland, becoming the first ever Irish Acro trio in their age group (11 – 16) to make a final at such a high level. Their success continued into 2011 when they were selected to compete for Ireland at the 2011 European Age Group Championships in Bulgaria after regaining their Irish National title earlier in the year.
The gymnasts have been training throughout the week with Coach Michael Hughes which has gone according to plan with the girls looking strong and ready to compete. They will compete in the 11 – 16 age group qualifications on Friday morning between 9.30am and 12.50pm (2.30pm and 5.50pm in Dublin) beginning with Balance, followed by Dynamic, they will take to the floor 27th, out of 32 groups competing. Only the top 8 groups will qualify and proceed through to finals. Should they successfully qualify for finals, the girls will compete again on Sunday.
The FIG have a detailed post on how to follow the action from Lake Buena Vista here. Check out the pictures below of the girls in training in Florida.
