Ellie Downie is Great British Team Member Becky Downie’s younger sister. At 11 years old she is the British U12 champion. Ellie’s coach Claire Starkey at Notts Gym Club thinks that Ellie is just as talented as her older sister and feels that if Ellie continues to work as well as she has that it’s a strong possibility that she could compete in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, maybe even with Becky if she continues to compete in her 20’s like Beth Tweddle. Ellie is currently on the Development 1 squad
“They both work very hard and are lovely together in the gym. There is no competition between them because of the age gap.
“I think both Ellie and Becky have got great ability and they listen to what they are taught and learn. Ellie takes things on board, picks up what you are teaching her and always tries her best.
“Both of them are the same in that context but in terms of their physical attributes, they are quite different.
“Becky has a better leg line, whereas Ellie is more powerful at that age.
“You need a mix of both and Ellie is more power but not as much elegance, so we work harder on that side of things whereas the area they are more natural in, we don’t have to work on as much.
“But both of them have got that competitive attitude, which you need. That is in their genes.”
Here’s a video of Ellie competing at a regional gym competition in September this year.
