British Gymnastics Magazine: The Gymnast

The June / July edition of British Gymnastics Official Magazine “The Gymnast” has been released. I love these online magazines that are accessible to all. Among my favorites is USAG’s Technique Magazine, full of advertisements but still plenty of interesting bits to read.

The Gymnast is great. Up to date news from British Gymnastics, still plenty of ads but some good content. I love the interactive videos featured. This month has a feature on how Glasgow won their bid to host the 2015 World Championships. There is also a great feature on gymnast Niamh Rippin, not someone we hear too much about after Danusia Francis, Jenni Pinches, Nicole Hibbert, Beth Tweddle, Hannah Whelan and Becky Downie. Niamh has been  out for nearly a year as a result of injury.

So Niamh, talk us through the last year?

I last competed fully in the summer of 2010 at the British Championships on the back of one of my best years. After the competition I had a bad back and so began to reduce my training until we discovered a stress fracture and so I was in rehabilitation for 3 months over winter – the worst 3 months of my life! In December I got the all clear and began to make progress and then I broke my hand, so not the best year all in!   Competing at the Europeans was definitely one of the highlights of my career and I felt really confident hoping to push on for the rest of the year looking ahead to the Commonwealths or maybe even the Worlds but it wasn’t to be.
