At & T American Cup Line Up announced

This years AT & T American Cup is set for March 3rd in Madison Square Garden, New York City and kicks off the 2012 World Cup Season.  World Cup rules for Category C- II –  the top eight ranked gymnasts in the All Around competition from the 2011 World Championships are invited to compete. In the case that one of these gymnasts declines, a place is offered to the next gymnast who ranked 9th – 12th.

The line – up was announced yesterday, January 24th:

  • USA: Danell Leyva
  • USA: John Orozco
  • France: Cyril Tommasone
  • Germany: Philipp Boy
  • Germany: Marcel Nguyen
  • Great Britain: Daniel Purvis
  • Ukraine: Mykola Kuksenkov
  • One additional male athlete will be named to replace a withdrawal due to injury.

  • USA: Aly Raisman
  • USA: Jordyn Wieber
  • Australia: Georgia Simpson
  • Germany: Lisa Hill
  • Germany: Nadine Jarosch
  • Great Britain: Rebecca Tunney
  • Romania: Diana Chelaru
  • Romania: Larisa Iordache

The women’s competition brings a strong US duo of Raisman and Wieber, we can expect to see upgrades from both gymnasts. As Gymnastics Examiner points out, if Jordyn Wieber wins the title, will have won three of the four American Cups this quad, the first one being when she was just 13.  Both Romania and Great Britain will show off their new seniors with Larissa Iordache making her senior debut. Iordache could be just what Romania needs since the announcement of Ana Porgras retirement. I felt that GBR’s Rebecca Tunney didn’t shine as much as she could have at the London 2012 Test Event, so the American Cup will be a good stage for her to show what she can do. I fully expect her to take a place on the Olympic Team with Liverpool team mates Tweddle and Pinches. Australia’s Georgia Simpson, failed to impress at the Test Event, she recently suffered an elbow injury I believe so had low difficulty but the American Cup will do her good, to ease her back in. I expect that she will be more on form by March.

Out of the 15 gymnasts listed above, six of these have already previously competed at the American Cup, the majority in the MAG competition. Daniel Purvis will take to the stage again, he placed 8th at last years competition but since then has climbed up the ranks. Mykola Kusekenkov will also return to the USA, he placed second in last years competition being Jonathan Horton. American Cup first timer Danell Leyva will get his big break this year, having settled for reserve in both 2009 and 2010. Other strong AA’s Phillip Boy and Cyril Tommasone will compete. Due to an injury withdraw, USA will fill in the gap with one of their own to compete with John Orozco and Leyva.
