10 minutes with: Ellie Black (CAN)

Full Twist contributor Anna Rose Johnson caught up with Ellie Black to discuss the Pacific Rim Championships, her training, and her future plans.

Ellie is one of Canada’s top gymnasts. She finished third at the Elite Canada competition in February, and she was a member of the 2012 Canadian Olympic team that finished fifth. Ellie also made the vault final in London and the floor exercise final at the 2013 World Championships. She is a true all-around gymnast and is strong on every apparatus! Ellie trains at Halifax Alta Gymnastics with coaches David Kikuchi and Keiji Yamanaka.

FT: What are your goals for the Pacific Rim Championships and beyond?

EB: Our goals for Pacific Rim Championships are to come together strongly as a team and represent Canada as best we can. This is a great opportunity for all the girls here to compete as a team and represent Canada at this amazing competition. My goals for beyond are to keep pushing to get my routines very constant and to learn from every competition experience that I get a chance to compete at.

FT: What’s your favorite memory from competition?

EB: My favourite memory from competition is definitely when our team placed 5th at the 2012 Olympics. We worked very hard as a team coming together to represent Canada the best we could and it resulted in our best ever team finish.

FT: Can you tell us about the process of learning your eponymous skill, the 2 ½ twist to triple on floor?

EB: My coach Keiji has always tried to find skills for me that are unique and stand out. The process started with trying a back 1 ½ twist step out. It was quite easy for me so my coach had me try a 2 ½ step out. After that we worked on the triple out of the 2 ½, which I could do by itself.

FT: Have you considered competing for a U.S. college in NCAA gymnastics?

EB: I have considered competing for a U.S college in NCAA gymnastics, but there are still competitions I would like to represent Canada at and goals that I have for myself competing at the elite level.

FT: Is there any gymnast in particular whom you especially admire?

EB: A gymnast that I admire a lot is Peng Peng Lee. Through all her struggles she has never given up and she has accomplished so much. She is such a great teammate and beautiful gymnast. On the men’s side I really admire Hugh Smith, a gymnast on the men’s Canadian team who I train with. He always inspires me by going for his dreams and never giving up.

FT: What do you enjoy doing outside of gymnastics?

EB: Outside of gymnastics I enjoy relaxing and watching a good movie with my family. Also spending time with friends and shopping.

Many thanks to Ellie Black and her Coach David Kikuchi for taking the time to chat with Full Twist.
