Gymnastics Australia have announced that they will not be sending any female gymnasts to this years World Championships in Antwerp. A final selection competition was held on Monday with Georgia Godwin and Mary Anne Monckton both in contention for the single Beam place, unfortunately neither gymnast made the set target. Gymnastics Australia said:
GA increased selection scores for all Olympic Gymsports to reflect the performance standards that athletes would be required to meet in order to qualify for finals and win medals at World Championship events in 2013 and beyond.
Monckton and Godwin were required to achieve a 6.3 D-score and 14.80 final score to be selected but just missed the mark for Antwerp scoring 6.1/14.10 and 6.2/13.90 respectively. WAG National Coach, Peggy Liddick, praised the girls for the work they had done to improve their difficulty and performances since the Australian Championships and noted that they were now ‘setting the pace’ for other Australian athletes working towards podium finishes at benchmark events between now and the 2016 Olympic Games.
It’s a pity. Australia are sending three MAG to Antwerp.
