The FIG announced today that they will offer financial aid to under privileged gymnasts. The Foundation Council for the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) will allocate study grants to those who  are national senior and junior members of Olympic disciplines.
The FIG explains:
Every year twelve gymnasts, three each from the Olympic disciplines of Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic and Trampoline, will receive a grant of 5,000 CHF toward a training and education programme, allowing them to complete their studies for the most part at the university level. Tweet Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced on Monday that the government will spend $3 billion ( 90 billion rubles), on the development of sports in Russia over the next 3 years. The money will be invested in sports development in 2011 and funding for sports medicine will also be increased. The Prime Minister also declared that 2011 is the Year of  Sports in Russia!

Whilst the funding seems to be more geared towards Sochi 2014 (Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2014) rather than London 2012, I’m sure that the  Russian gymnastics teams …

Why, though, is this all happening now? Who has flicked a switch to turn Britain from a gymnastics also-ran to a world power with an eye on medals at a home Olympics? Is it all down to money?
It’s certainly an interesting take on it. Have a read of the article. I always love reading about how gymnastics is  funded in other countries and how their systems work.
