Olympic Torch Relay – Dublin 6th June

The Olympic torch is to be taken on a quick tour of Dublin tomorrow after a handover ceremony on the border of Northern Ireland and Ireland involving 1992 Olympic boxing medal winners Wayne McCullough and Michael Carruth.

The Olympic Torch will be greeted in Howth by President Michael D Higgins early tomorrow morning.The relay then begins at 8am with forty torch bearers winding their way through the city’s street starting at Croke Park Stadium where the Olympic Torch will take a tour of the Croke Park skyline walk accompanied by well – known Kilkenny hurler Henry Shefflin. After a quick run through the streets of Dublin with familiar names such as footballer Paul McGrath, Jedward, Olympic Boxing Champion Kenneth Egan, Athlete Ronnie Delaney, Jockey Ruby Walsh and Rugby Player Shane Horgan, the torch will finish up at the Olympic Stage in St. Stephen’s Green at 11.30am where torchbearer and World Athletics Champion Sonia O’Sullivan will light an Olympic cauldron.

The torch will return to Belfast tomorrow afternoon before moving on to Scotland.
