New 50p coin celebrates gymnastics

Today the Royal Mint (UK) launched a set of commemorative coins as lasting mementos of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The coin, which features a rhythmic gymnast captured in mid turn holding onto her ribbon, is one of 29 designs that represent the 29 Olympic and Paralympic sports to be contested during the Games.

Jonathan Olliffe won the chance to design the coin for Royal Mint. He told British Gymnastics that he chose to design the Gymnastics coin as he felt it presented him a great challenge to capture an Olympic sporting moment on a small area.

You can find out more about the coin from the Royal Mint website. There’s a video but it’s currently not working when I click play. You can buy one of these for £2.99.
