In an effort to help boost the Philippines talents and success at International competition, coaches and experts from Japan are reportedly offering their assistance during a 2 day seminar. Two time Japanese Olympian Yukio Iketani who is said to have helped Kohei Uchimura claim the All Around title and silver floor tite at the London Olympic Games will be offering his assistance.
The seminar has come about a month after the Philippines Gymnastics Association (GAP) sent 4 young gymnasts Fortunato Abad, Reyland Capellan, Marvin Besa, and Carlos Yulo to Tokyo to undergo a month long training regimen with Japanese coaches. Following the success of the program, the Japanese Gymnastics Association and the GAP agreed to form an exchange program, involving Japanese coaches, who will be sent to the Philippines in the future.
As part of this initiative, two of the Philippines up and coming talented gymnasts Carlos Yulo (12) and Jag Timbang (14) will also be sent to a high-level training for one year starting early January next year in preparation for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. Both gymnasts are said to be the future of gymnastics in the Philippines, currently training six days a week in the Rizal Memorial Sports Center. Here is Carlos Yulo earlier this year:
As coaches, it is vital that we help each other out. We can learn from one another and gain valuable knowledge from listening to and observing other coaches. This is how we will help our sport grow, especially in smaller gymnastics nations.
