Hannah Whelan – AA Finals 0.00 VT

Hannah Whelan was given no marks for her DTY vault at tonight’s Women’s All Around final. A score of 0.00 is given to a vault when the feet do not land first. These pictures seem to show otherwise. Shouldn’t there have been video replay?

She “sweeped” the landing. Some judges consider that to be the same as no feet first.

A bad error by the judges – so very sad for Hannah!

Video would only have been used if an appeal had been lodged. It is much harder to tell if a backwards landing vault has been voided than a forwards one. I’m not actually sure if a 0.00 score can be appealed. If it can then we can only assume it means that Hannah Whelan and her coaches thought she deserved the score. Very hard to expect the judges to see if she landed feet first if the gymnast herself can’t even feel the difference.

Gymnastics is a beautiful sport full of stupid arbitrary rules which make it hard for fans to really appreciate it. This one of but numerous examples.
