European Gymnastics Championships 2011: Day 1 Summary

images

The Euro’s kicked off this morning with the Women’s Qualification event. It seemed like a really interesting day.

Gymnastics Examiner and International Gymnast were posting excellent up to the minute updates on Facebook and Twitter. Highlighting some important tit-bits as well as live blogging the gymnasts routines. Universal Sports and Alan Edwards, the British Gymnastics official photographer have uploaded photos from today’s competition.

Some highlights:

  • Mustafina absolutely dominated her subdivision:

… The arena falls silent. You could hear a pin drop in here. All eyes are on Mustafina, all breath bated. Arabian double front, tiny hop. 2.5 to front layout full, stuck. “Oh my God,” says Paul Ziert, who is sitting next to me. Triple turn. Switch half. Switch, switch ring. 1.5 to Rudi, STUCK. My God…this is incredible! She has everyone in the palm of her hand. Long wait for last pass, but STUCK triple full. WOW.

  • The Russian Coach Alexander Alexandrov argues over vault scores with the judges
  • Ana Porgras almost leaps off the beam, failing to qualify – and omits from floor
  • Danusia Francis made a mark in the minds of the live bloggers – a few calling her “elegant”
  • Mustafina bet Beth Tweddle on bars… makes the final very interesting

So, who qualified through to the finals? Those underlined have videos of their performance embedded, click on the link to view.More will be added as they come up online.

I’m delighted for Tweddle that she made it through on both beam and floor, as things sounded a bit dodgy for a while over the last 2 days for her. I’m shocked that there are no Romanians in the beam finals, especially not Ana Porgras. I’m dying to see what happened her on beam as Blythe Lawrence said that it seemed like she caught have stayed on easily. Here we go:

Some great gymnasts are left out of some of the event finals due to the 2 per country rule which is particularly disappointing. I’m delighted that Sandra Izbasa had a good day, her floor sounds fantastic. There’s a clip of it here, she looks great – can’t wait to see the full thing.

The Women’s competition continues on Friday with the All Around competition. Check our coverage post for online and television coverage.
