Coach John Howard of Gymnastics Zone discusses differences between coaching girls and boys gymnastics. He cites one main difference between boys and girls – confidence. I too find this when coaching, boys have less of the “fear factor”, girls question, alot. They wonder – “what if” a lot. John cites the following to note in relation to coaching girls:

  • Girls Often Don’t Understand How Good they Are
  • Coaches Must Constantly Work to Build Confidence
  • Praise is Primary
  • Coaches Should Be Truly Confident In Their Abilities and Program
  • Coaches Need To Allow More for Individual Differences
  • Coaches Controlling Behavior Does Not Work in the Long Run
  • Coaching is Teaching
  • The Training Program Must Be Solid
  • Their Feedback Will Help The Training Process
  • Positivity, Praise and Participation
  • Pay Attention to Them
  • Knowledge and the Ability to Transmit It
  • Democracy with Direction
  • Maintain Control and Goals
  • Mutual Movement Toward Positive Goals
