Australian & English Athletes withdraw from Commonwealth Games

Yesterday Full Twist posted about the possibility that the Scottish and English delegation may withdraw from the Commonwealth Games due to the poor facilities in the athletes village and followed up with more trouble with a footbridge collapsing close to the main stadium. It seems this was just the beginning.

Australian discus athlete Dani Samuels and English triple jumper Phillips Idowu have withdrawn from the Games and more may quit. Samuels has said that no gold medal is worth risking her life.  Furthermore, John Key the New Zealand Prime Minister  has said that he will support any athlete who wishes to withdraw from the Games. The English team are said to make a decision on travelling within 48 hours.

As John Key told reporters any cancellation of the Games could be disastrous for the future of the event and for India’s world standing. It would be a real pity if the Games were cancelled.

As I write, I’ve just seen a report on Sky News that a false ceiling at the weight lifting arena has collapsed! Total chaos!!
