The AT & T American Cup takes place this coming weekend, March 3rd, in Madison Square Garden, New York. It is the first event for the USA gymnasts who will use the competition to kick off their Olympic year.
Jordyn Wieber is the firm favourite to win this All Around competition. Many are interested to see what upgrades Wieber will show off at this weekends competition. Romania’s Larisa Iordache, Britain’s Rebecca Tunney and Australia’s Georgia Simpson are expected to step up their game on the international scene in what will be a big competition for them. For Iordache, this will be her Senior debut, so could she, like Viktoria Komova in her first year as a senior, give Wieber a run for her money? Eyes will also be on Aly Raisman who could be the one to pip Wieber to the post and claim the gold medal. In my opinion, I see Wieber or Raisman on top of the podium with Iordache and Canada’s Victoria Moors in contention for medals but of course, with gymnastics – no matter what happens in training, whatever happens on the day of competition, happens!
Gymnastics Examiner has a fantastic preview of the women’s field for this years American Cup. Be sure to check it out here.
In the Men’s field, well, I nearly see it as anyone’s game. Daniel Purvis placed in 8th place in last years Americn Cup in Jacksonville but since then he has gone from strength to strength placing 4th in the AA competition at the 2011 World Championships and third on floor. John Orozco has a huge chance of medalling as does Leyva. I see Orozco, Purvis, Lyeva, Kukesenkov and Nguyen in contention for medals.
